Class 3 Versus Class 4 Shingles
Class 4 shingles offer superior impact resistance against hail compared to Class 3 shingles.
Class 4 shingles are tested to withstand the impact of a 2-inch steel ball dropped from a height comparable to a two-story building, while Class 3 shingles are tested to resist a 1.75-inch steel ball from nearly the same height.
Insurance Discount!
Class 4 shingles provide a more significant homeowner’s insurance discount over Class 3 shingles. The difference can be up to an extra 10% discount.
Starting in 2025, many insurance companies placed ACV restrictions on roofs. If a roof is 10 year old, or older then it no longer has full RCV coverage. This is waived with Class 3 and Class 4 shingles for most companies – they retain full RCV coverage.
After a smaller hailstorm, such as 1″ to 1.25″ hail stones, homeowners with Impact Resistant shingles are less likely to need replacement of their roof and incur the deductible expense and hassle of replacing the roof again.
Cost Comparison
Class 3 shingles are a more budget-friendly compared to Class 4 shingles and are suitable for areas with milder weather and moderate hail risk.
If your roof is totaled with “normal” shingles, your insurance company owes for like-kind, like-quality and so the cost of upgrading to a Class 3 or a Class 4 shingle will be out-of-pocket for the homeowner.
It is best to call your insurance agent or company and inquire about their discount on each type of shingle. Then you’ll need the upgrade cost from your roofer. These numbers will tell you have long it will take to recoup the cost of the shingles versus the insurance discount.
Selling your home?
Having Impact Resistant shingles is a selling point on your home for real estate transactions as they command a premium from buyers who want the increased protection and reduced homeowner’s insurance premiums!
